The GATE program supports high-achieving and underachieving pupils who are identified as gifted and talented. By state definition, gifted students have a capacity for excellence far beyond that of their chronological peers. This capacity includes many and varied characteristics that require modifications of curriculum and instruction. These modifications form the basis of gifted and talented educational services.
In the 2011-2012 school year, Hickman Elementary introduced a new model for gifted and talented education called the Diversity Cluster Model. This approach places a minimum of 25 percent of gifted students in each classroom. The remaining students reflect the diversity of the school. Modifications to lesson plans take place to ensure the needs of all students are met throughout the school day.
